How to write a love letter

A good love letter doesn't need to be long or poetic. It needs to be specific: a memory only the two of you share, what you admire about the person and what you hope for next. With that, the letter takes about 15 minutes.

The 5-part structure

Follow this order. Each part can be one to three sentences.

  1. Use their name or nickname

The nickname only you use already says who the letter is for. Skip the generic "Dear".

  2. Tell one concrete memory

A day, a place, something that was said. "That Sunday the rain trapped us in the bakery" beats "all the moments we've shared".

  3. Say what you admire

Pick two or three qualities and give an example of each. Praise with an example sounds true; praise on its own sounds like a store-bought card.

  4. Talk about now and what's next

Why are you writing today? An anniversary, missing them, an apology. End with a small, real plan: the next trip, Saturday's dinner.

  5. Sign off your way

Sign with the name they call you. A short P.S. with an inside joke is often the most re-read line.

Before you write: note three memories

Open your photo gallery and pick three photos from different moments. For each, write one sentence about what happened and how you felt. Those sentences become the middle of the letter.

Write the way you talk. If you two text in slang and jokes, the letter can too. They'll recognize your voice.

Opening lines

  • "I've wanted to tell you something for a while, and writing it down is the way I found."
  • "Remember when…? I think about it every day."
  • "It's been a year today, and I still catch myself smiling because of you."
  • "I'm not great with words, so I'll use the simplest ones: I love you."

Common mistakes

  • Copying a letter from the internet: they'll notice in the first line.
  • Talking only about yourself ("I feel", "I want") and not about them.
  • Writing too much: 150 to 300 words is plenty.
  • Promising what you won't do.

Paper or digital?

A paper letter has the charm of handwriting, but it can get lost and can't carry music or photos. A digital love letter brings the text, your photos and your song together in a link they open on their phone, and it can be kept forever.

With LoveYouGift you write the letter, add up to 10 photos and a YouTube song, and deliver it by link or QR code. You can set a date and time for it to open. No account needed, and you pay once, from $4.90.

Three short examples

For a dating anniversary
Lu, A year ago you showed up late to our first date and apologized to the waiter instead of me. I laughed and knew right then I'd like you. I admire how you look after everyone without asking for anything back, and how you laugh out loud at the movies without caring who looks. Here's to a year with more last-minute trips and fewer Mondays. Saturday's dinner is on me. Love you, Gabi
For a long-distance partner
Love, Today I walked past that ice-cream place and ordered your flavor without thinking. It was awful, but it made you feel close. The distance showed me how patient you are, and how you make me laugh even on a frozen video call. 23 days to go. I'm counting. Yours, Teo
To say sorry
Rafa, Yesterday I spoke without thinking and hurt you. You didn't deserve that, and I know it. What I admire most about you is how you listen. This time, I'm the one who needs to listen. Can I pick you up tomorrow so we can talk calmly? With love, Nina

Love letter questions

How long should a love letter be?

Between 150 and 300 words. That's enough for one memory, a compliment with an example and a plan for the future, and it fits on a phone screen.

How do you start a love letter?

Start with their name or nickname and go straight to a concrete memory you share. Avoid generic openings like "Dear".

Can I send a love letter by phone?

Yes. A digital love letter opens from a link or QR code, with photos and music, and the person doesn't need to install any app.

What should I write in a love letter to my girlfriend or boyfriend?

A specific memory of the two of you, two or three qualities with examples, why you're writing today and a small plan for the days ahead.
